U.S. GPO PICS Legacy Data Conversion

Procurement Information Control System, or PICS, was the Printing Procurement system used by GPO.  Originally created in 1978, management decided to move away from green screens to a web-based user interface.  The team s purpose was to convert the legacy mainframe data system to a relational database management system.   

 

U.S. GPO Quality Tracking

Role: Programmer

Tools Used: ASP, ASP.Net, ADO.Net, JavaScript, SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 7

Created a print production quality tracking system.  The system logged vendor complaints and contractor resolution.  Stored complaint history and allowed GPO to track contractor performance.  Allowed the uploading of samples for visual review from the Quality Assurance department.  Half way through the project, management decided to use .Net technologies.  The code was converted and the application was released as a .Net application.  The project was then integrated into the GPO Neptunes release.

 

U.S. GPO Neptunes

Neptunes is the front-end replacement for the Procurement Information Control System (PICS).  It is the day to day system used by employees at the GPO for inputting and retrieving print procurement information concerning contractors, customers, or the print jobs themselves.  The system is used by the GPO central office in Washington, D.C. and by employees in the other eleven regions and twenty satellite offices.

 

U.S. GPO Contractor Connect

Role: Lead Programmer

Contractor Connect is one of the three main components of Neptunes .  Contractor Connect allows for contractors to register their Cage Codes with the GPO.  It also stores information about the contractors such as their print capabilities, their approved quality level, and their compliance levels.  The system links with GPO s Voucher Payment System, assuring that qualified contractors get paid.

 

 

 

U.S. GPO Partnering Team

Selected as one of a seven member team that traveled to California and met with corporate representatives from Microsoft, Adobe, Hewlett-Packard, and Google.  The objective was to create a partnership with the GPO to use advanced technology in government information dissemination.

The team s objectives were to create metadata standards that would be used pertaining to GPO s content management system.  The standards had to encapsulate a broad range of media, accounting for all types of federally printed materials.

Converted Senate vote data from M204 data to Oracle 8 and then 9 databases.  The database was then replicated to SQL Server 2000 for bureaucratic reasons internal to the U.S. Senate.

 

U.S. RPC Internal/External Site

Tools Used: SQL Server 2000, C# and .Net technologies, Cold Fusion

Created new internal (Senate wide) and external (www.rpc.senate.gov) web sites.  These sites were built side by side.  The internal site has access to more of the committees literature and products.  At present, the external site is a cold fusion site, but another external site exists.  The mirrored .Net sit is awaiting Senate approval of .Net technology.  The current policy uses Cold Fusion as the web deployment standard for any site served by the U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms (SAA).  All external Senate sites are hosted by the SAA.  There are no regulations for servers maintained by the many independent offices inside the U.S. Senate.

 

U.S. RPC Vote Data Web Service

Role: Project Manager, Lead Programmer

Tools Used: SQL Server 2000, C# and .Net technologies, XML technologies

Created and published vote data web service.  This service is used by internal Senate offices and many media corporations to retrieve Senate vote data.

 

U.S. RPC TrunkLine

Role: Analyst

Served as consultant to represent the Republican Policy Committees interests to the Senate Republican Conference (SRC) while they were constructing the new Republican intranet site called the TrunkLine.  The TrunkLine uses many of the features developed by the RPC for use on their internal site.  The TrunkLine currently serves as the largest portal to information in the U.S. Senate.

U.S. RPC Variable Data and Format Document Production

Created data entry web site for all types of committee literature.  The data is stored as formatted text (HTML).  We then deliver the content to different medias through the use of XSL translation and XSL:FO.  The resulting output allows the committee to store data and output it in a wide variety of formats; separating format from content.
