as supervisor, for united airlines my duties include tracking the safety of 75,000 employees either directly or indirectly. a key role has been not only to define initial strategies for identifying, evaluating and mitigating risk, but continually monitoring, documenting and controlling program risks on a daily basis to ensure safety and integrity of operations.

my expertise in risk management is a result of my experience working within unites airlines, in addition to the education obtained while attending grantham university. as a rule of the discipline, risk management usually has five primary steps to the process. the first step is to identify the problem. the second step is evaluating and documenting the risk. the third step is eliminating the risk. the fourth step is managing any failures. the fifth step is to follow up and determine the status of the risk.

in my professional experience an instance comes to mind where i was responsible for implementing risk management expertise when several employees were getting injured on the job due to fan cowls that were being left open and aircraft maintenance technicians (amts) would injure their heads while working on aircraft engines.

 

after identifying this problem, i was able to identify and evaluate the risk. as a result, i documented methods for employees to avoid being hurt while working on engines. the procedures i described for amts included mandatory use of hard hats while repairing engines and when opening or closing of cowls.

 

after implementation of the risk management procedures, i followed up with the procedures to see if they were successful. as a result, the station experienced a significant reduction in employee down time and injuries with a recognizable increase in productivity and assurance of a safe environment for employees. subsequently, we have made some minor adjustments to the established procedures; nonetheless the system has proven to be a success for the organization and employees alike. the system remains in effect currently.

my career in aviation spans 20 years. during this time, i have learned how to evaluate a process to make sure that it results in the  intended goal. in most instances, i begin with what are the intended goals of a process and i build the steps necessary to reach that goal. i test each step along the way with relation to what is really happening. additionally, i adhere to the criteria for what constitutes a pass or fail according to the parameters set up by the manufacturer for their product.

 

as supervisor for united airlines, it is my goal to consistently evaluate safety processes or components and evaluate if the processes are producing the result they were designed to achieve.

 

for example, an aircraft was damaged by ramp personnel. it was my duty to evaluate the maintenance manual and structural repair manual and evaluated the manual contents in relation to the required repairs. i collaborated with the engineering department and determined whether repairs were correctly made. next, i contacted the parts department to assist with parts that we did not have in stock after looking up necessary parts in the ipc. i then had to contact line maintenance control to obtain assistance with receiving needed parts and logistics control for help on delivering parts in the required timeframe. knowing how to use the tools and information at hand speeded up the process and improved proficiency among employees.
