FACTOR 1:   Ability to Communicate Orally

Currently, I serve as Chaplain Resident for the Veterans Administration at their Dayton, OH, Medical Center, providing counseling and support to our Veterans in distress.  Utilizing over 20 years of experience, coupled with advanced education, I offer empathetic yet professional attention, expressing compassion and understanding of their circumstances and needs.  Additionally, I provide grief counseling and loss support, as well as crisis intervention when called for.  As a member of the Veterans patient care team, I participate in various care conferences, often in an advocacy role, and collaborate with other healthcare team members.  In order to foster open communication between various sectors of the system, I interact closely with staff members, supporting them through times of personal or professional crises and often serve as a mediator to facilitate conflict resolution between staff and patients.

Early in my career, as a Behavioral Counselor at Maryhurst in Louisville, KY, a shelter for abused young and adolescent girls, I was involved with coordinating services for these youngsters as part of a program of assisting them in recovering from their traumas and moving forward to living healthy and productive lives.  These efforts required utilizing a great deal of oral communication on a consistent basis, interacting with the girls throughout the day as they were taught fundamental life skills such as basic chores and adhering to schedules for school and homework, meals and bedtimes.  All of these activities presented opportunities for one-on-one conversation and mentoring, as well as teaching in a group setting.  Following daily sessions with the residents, I would participate in discussions with other members of the therapeutic teams, which allowed opportunities to for me to clearly present advocacy support issues in a roundtable, conversational format.

Following this assignment, I assumed responsibilities as Chaplain for the Wayside Christian Mission in Louisville, KY, a facility which supported hundreds of individuals in providing emergency shelter.  As director of a staff of 19, I interfaced constantly with these individuals, directing them in achieving the goals of the Mission, which were to meet the needs of our clientele with civility, dignity and kindness in a caring environment.  Because the Mission employed a curriculum following the 12-step program utilized by Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, I served as a leader of these group discussion and teaching sessions, again requiring oral communication skill sets.  Additionally, as a spiritual leader, I was often called upon to serve as an empathetic and compassionate resource, providing grief and loss care and understanding, which involved discerning the right choice of words in order to give the most comfort and support.  As a representative of our organization to the surrounding community, I was also charged with presenting the Mission s policies and clarifying our core directives and mission statement to them, to the end that both the Mission and community at large could be in basic agreement as to our purpose and achieving the same positive end-result.  Overarching all, I employed my oral communication skills as spiritual leader of the

worship services for the Mission, on both the Sabbath and church holidays, and officiated at

other services marking important life-changing events, such as marriages and funerals or memorial services.

Shifting to a somewhat more secular role, I next served as Executive Director for the Jefferson Street Baptist Center, where we focused on assisting homeless individuals also dealing with the additional difficulties of mental illness and/or substance abuse.  I worked diligently in convincing our larger governing body to support the development of additional facilities for our homeless clients, including a day shelter and a 30-bed transitional unit, as well as project-managing the construction of a 12-unit, low income apartment group, focusing particularly on the needs of Veterans.   Additionally, I recruited, trained and mentored staff as well as volunteers for these projects and oversaw various HR functions, including dismissal of staff personnel as necessary.  Finally, as Director, I served on numerous Boards and Committees, many related to the issues of homelessness and substance abuse, and worked closely with the City of Louisville Police Department in training police officers on best methods for dealing with mentally ill and substance-abusing homeless individuals.

In addition to my present role as Chaplain Resident, I am also Senior Pastor at Campbellstown United Church of Christ in Eaton, OH, and was Senior Pastor in Shallow Ford UCC in Elon, NC, prior to that assignment.  Both of these positions required continuous, on-going utilization of oral communication skills, as my primary purpose as spiritual leader was to communicate God s direction to the congregation.  This included conducting worship services, developing and delivering weekly sermons, administering sacraments, visiting with and giving counsel and support to ill or infirm congregants, teaching weekly Bible study classes, and officiating at such life-changing events as weddings and funerals.

FACTOR 2:   Ability to Communicate in Writing

In my current position as Chaplain Resident, I have been retained by the Veterans Administration to serve in a counseling and support role for patients serviced at the Dayton, OH, Medical Center.  Following listening and counseling interaction with patients, I author reports for file and medical charts regarding assessment findings and general impressions as to patient s progression toward recovery or general condition.  I collaborate in in-depth meetings with members of other healthcare teams, presenting files on various cases under review, and working closely with them in developing spiritually-focused groups to participate in various treatment programs.

Concurrently with my role as Chaplain for the VA, and in a preceding position, serve(d) as Senior Pastor for the United Church of Christ congregations in Eaton, OH, and Elon , NC.  While a great deal of the pastoral charge calls for delivering sermons during worship services, conducting rituals at other times during the Church year, and counseling individuals and families, such messages are typically prepared and honed in written form in preparation of verbal delivery, and must be crafted so as to present the message as clearly and forcefully yet succinctly as possible.  At other times, I am called on to prepare messages of condolence or sympathy for delivery to families, which requires skillful yet compassionate use of language to achieve just the right balance of understanding the pain of loss yet encouraging strength and comfort for the future.  Administratively, I work with the Church council in Eaton to develop the annual budget, direct funds disbursal, oversee stewardship activities and design and implement policies and procedures for Christian education, all of which require utilization of the written word to convey philosophy and direction.

Earlier, as Executive Director of a Baptist Center in Louisville, KY, I held responsibility for oversight and growth of various programs aimed at assisting homeless individuals, particularly those with problems in the areas of substance abuse and, in some cases, mental illness as well.  To achieve this growth, I worked closely with legal advisors to prepare and author 501(c) documentation in support of the Center being designated as an agency separate from the Baptist governing body.  Having comprehensive management responsibility for success of this venture, I wrote the employee manual, developed all job descriptions, designed training programs and oversaw recruitment and hiring.  Additionally, I designed and administered volunteer recruitment and training, all of which required considerable capabilities in the arena of written communication.

Another important function of the Executive Director was in budget development and support, including grant application writing, which requires adherence to very specific and explicit directives.  I became proficient in this discipline, which helped grow the budget from $80,000 in 1994 to $1.2MM+ annually by 2002.

FACTOR 2:   Ability to Communicate in Writing - CONTINUED

In my position as Chaplain for a homeless shelter Mission, a primary responsibility was to conduct lifestyle recovery education for large numbers of individuals who sought emergency assistance in our facility.  In this role, I prepared materials utilized in following the 12-step recovery program developed and employed by Alcoholic/Narcotics Anonymous.   Classes were held on a seven days/week schedule and newcomers were required to be familiar with the curriculum and to prepare homework assignments which we utilized in the meetings.  Upon graduation, I worked closely with Case Workers in preparing the documentation needed for accessing the various support services available through the state and Federal social services system, including finding housing and gaining employment.

My earliest assignment in the Social Services/Counseling field was as a Behavior Counselor for a home/shelter for young girls and adolescents who were the victims of various forms of abuse.  These youngsters required large and varied amounts of therapy, beginning with learning to work within a lovingly structured environment.  I interacted closely with them on a daily basis, helping them to learn to work within a schedule, accomplish assigned chores, accept responsibility for classroom behavior and homework assignments, and in general develop healthy, positive thought processes and behaviors.  While the majority of this interaction was oral in nature, as part of the therapeutic and rehabilitative support team, I memorialized my interfacing activities in reports which became part of the work file for each of our youngsters.  My reports were utilized to communicate my findings and analyses to be used in conjunction with those of other members of the support team to understand each girl and develop a treatment plan geared to her specific needs.

FACTOR 3:   Ability to Deal Effectively with Others

My career in working with mentally and emotionally disabled individuals, utilizing spiritual insight as the guiding principle, began more than 20 years ago, where I was a Behavioral Counselor at a home/shelter for abused girls and young women.  There I learned to interact with traumatized youngsters, providing a strong supportive individual who was constantly available to them.  I also functioned as a member of the therapeutic team, offering insight and analysis geared toward our patients achieving wellness.

Currently I serve as Chaplain Resident for the Veterans Administration at their Dayton, OH, Medical Center, as well as holding a concurrent role as Senior Pastor for a United Church of Christ congregation in Eaton, OH.  Both of these positions require providing close and supportive interaction with individuals in need, as well as more secular and administrative management techniques employed with staff personnel.  From a therapeutic standpoint, it is important for patients to believe strongly in the empathetic and understanding support of the caregiver in order to progress toward the goal of wellness and/or stability.  My function is to provide such counseling support to patients.  As Pastor, I work closely with both congregants and non-members alike, bringing to bear my experience as an individual who understands the variety of difficulties people face and offering suggestions to re-directing some of the dynamics of poorly-functioning families in crisis.  In all cases, my approach to counseling and problem resolution emphasizes the spiritual component involved.

Operationally for the VA, I work closely with other members of the Veterans patient care team, contributing to care conferences and offering assessment of patient spiritual status.  I collaborate with other teams in assisting with the formation of groups to participate in a number of treatment programs.

Administratively, I maintain close working relationships with all staff members, serving as a mediator during times of conflict between staff and patients, and generally being a source of support when our personnel are affected by personal or workplace crises.   I also work closely with others in the Chaplain staff in officiating at graveside internment services at the VA National Cemetery.

As spiritual leader of our UCC congregation in Ohio, and earlier as Senior Pastor for a congregation in North Carolina, I am automatically a member of the various governing boards and committees.  In these positions, I work and have worked closely in developing and implementing such operational issues as budgets, disbursal of funds, planning of worship services and oversight of stewardship and Christian education activities.  As with any human group endeavor, all of these responsibilities carry with them the requirement for working with sometimes disparate factions, acknowledging and understanding the variety of agendas at play, and serving as a leader yet conciliator in order to blend the many into the cohesive one so that a greater good can be served.

FACTOR 3:   Ability to Deal Effectively with Others - CONTINUED

In an earlier role as Executive Director of a Baptist Center focusing on assisting homeless individuals with additional difficulties based on mental illness and/or substance abuse, I had to work closely with the Baptist governing board to convince them to allow the Center to function as separate entity.  As Director, I interfaced with legal advisors to prepare various documentation and building contractors involved in construction of several units, including low-income housing.  I recruited and trained all staff as well as volunteers.  In order to support and increase our budget, I enrolled in a Grant-writing course so that I could prepare and present Grant applications based on our fiscal needs.  The result of this was the growth of our budgetary funds from $80,000 at the beginning of my tenure at the Center to $1.2MM when I left.

Also, as Director, I was the face of the Center and as such, represented it with a variety of charitable organizations, including serving as a member of the Executive Board of the Louisville Chapter of the Coalition for the Homeless, and on the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Committee for the Homeless and the Mental Health Committee for the Homeless.  I also worked with the City of Louisville and the Coalition for the Homeless Continuum of Care Committee, and served in a liaison role with the City of Louisville Police Department to provide training in dealing with homeless and disadvantaged individuals.  And I was a member of the Interfaith Committee for Kentucky.

In an earlier Chaplain role, I directed and mentored a staff of 19 in providing empathetic and dignified care at a Christian Mission shelter for the homeless.  Additionally at this facility, led classes in 12-step recovery programs for individuals dealing with substance abuse issues, and served as mediator and counselor for conflict issues between staff and management.  As Chaplain, met with community leaders to present and explain the goals and direction of Mission.

FACTOR 4:   Ability to Minister to Persons from Various Social, Cultural and Racial Backgrounds

Since receiving my Master of Divinity in Pastoral Ministry in 1986, I have been involved in increasingly responsible positions of serving individuals ranging from abused children and adolescents in a non-denominational group home setting, through an assignment as Chaplain for a Christian Mission serving homeless individuals of all ages, to the Executive Directorship of a Baptist-affiliated shelter home and low-income housing complex, to Senior Pastor positions for two United Church of Christ congregations in North Carolina and Ohio, and currently as Chaplain Resident for the Veterans Administration at their Dayton, Ohio, Medical Center.

Whether non-denominational or sponsored by a specific religious organization, the primary goal in each case was to provide physical care and support in a spiritual setting.  The criteria utilized for the individuals partaking of the various avenues of care were that they were in need of help and support.  In the instance of the abused young and adolescent girls, the only concern was for their safety and healing, so that as much of the damage as possible could be assuaged and they could move forward in their lives with as healthy and balanced a perspective as possible.

As Chaplain at the Christian Mission in Louisville, KY, my and our staff s concern was for the homeless men and women who needed a safe and caring place to sleep.  The staff was trained to provide assistance in a civil, dignified and kind atmosphere.  To assist our residents to regain a positive direction and live a stable and peaceful life, we provided a 12-step treatment program for all, which gave them structure and focus.  We encouraged graduates to return to share their experiences with others and even lead some of the classes.  Working closely with other external resources, we were able to give assistance in finding housing and employment.

At the Baptist Center in Louisville, I was retained as Executive Director to restructure and expand programs to assist homeless individuals, particularly those with problems relating to mental illness and substance abuse.  Again, the basic criterion was that they needed help.  We expanded existing facilities, establishing a day shelter and building low-income apartments to be utilized by Veterans.  By serving on a number of committees in the Louisville area, I was able to encourage and develop specialized training for the City of Louisville Police Department regarding dealing with homeless individuals with the extra special needs of mental illness.

FACTOR 5:   Ability to Provide or Facilitate Liturgical and Sacramental Ministry to Persons from Various Religious Backgrounds

Ordained by the East Side Baptist Church, Paragould, AR, in 1984, I have served as Pastor to a number of congregations as well as in a spiritual advisor role in more secular settings.

Currently I am Chaplain Resident for the Dayton, OH, VA Medical Center.  While I provide spiritual insight, counseling and support for our patients, my specific liturgical and sacramental responsibilities lie in participation, with others in the Chaplain staff, in officiating at graveside internment services.

Concurrently, I am the Senior Pastor at the Campbellstown United Church of Christ in Eaton, OH.  For our congregation, I lead worship services and participation in various rituals of the Christian church.  This includes observing the Sabbath, prayer, meditation, administration of the Sacraments and reading from and leading study of the Holy Bible.  Additionally, I lead observance of Church holidays, such as Christmas, Easter, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, following prescribed forms of celebration of these important days and times.

Also, for members and non-members alike, I officiate at funerals and memorial services, and other life-changing events and rituals, including weddings and baptisms.  For those individuals who cannot physically attend worship services, I visit them in their homes or other facilities, engaging them in prayer and participation in the sacraments when possible.

As Chaplain for the Wayside Christian Mission in Louisville, I have served in a number of roles, including that of spiritual leader for this non-denominational homeless shelter.  I Led worship services on the Sabbath as well as on other Church holidays, which included prayer, Scripture reading and study, and offering blessings and the Sacraments.  Additionally, I officiated at important life-changing events, such as marriages, baptisms and funerals and memorial services.

I am highly interested in being considered for the Chaplain position available.  With more than 20 years of experience serving as a Chaplain, Senior Pastor, Executive Director and Behavior Counselor, I bring a broad-based background in counseling, empathetic support and understanding, crisis management, treatment programs and medical team involvement, all within a spiritual context.  I believe I can make a positive contribution as Chaplain and to acquaint you with my qualifications, I am submitting my resume.  In advance, I thank you for your time and consideration.

As demonstrated in the accompanying documents, I am currently serving with the Veterans Administration Healthcare System of Ohio as Chaplain Resident for the Dayton VA Medical Center in Dayton, OH.  In this position, I focus on empathetic listening and counseling, providing spiritual support to Veterans in distress, along with crisis intervention when needed.  I utilize advanced education as well as decades of experience to assess individuals and identify at-risk patients, in order to facilitate actions that will lead to a return to health.

Concurrent with this role I am the Senior Pastor for the Campbellstown United Church of Christ in Eaton, OH, which includes leading congregant worship services, on Sunday and Church holidays, with prayer, administration of Sacraments and Bible study.  As Pastor, major function of my position is to serve as counselor and mediator, providing spiritual insight and support for our members as they work through various areas of difficulties in their lives.  I also filled the position of Senior Pastor, prior to the call to Campbellstown, at Shallow Ford UCC in Elon, NC, where my duties of preaching, administering of sacraments and counseling were very similar.

In earlier assignments, I was Executive Director of the Jefferson Street Baptist Center in Louisville, KY, where I led the expansion and restructuring of programs aimed at assisting homeless individuals with particular problems with mental illness and substance abuse.  We expanded our facility and built low-income housing for individuals, and interacted closely with a variety of governmental entities and agencies to increase our assistance capabilities.  Additionally, I served as Chaplain for the non-denominational Wayside Christian Mission in Louisville, providing emergency shelter for men and women, and I began my career as a Behavior Counselor at a home/shelter for girls who had been abused.

As a Chaplain, you will find me to be a strong team member, committed to serving the greater good through superior performance.  I welcome the opportunity to meet with you at your earliest convenience, and look forward to interviewing with you in the near future.

Sincerely,
