KSA ESSAY RESPONSES

1) Please describe your ability to plan and conduct trial litigation enforcing labor laws within the Department's areas of responsibility and defending the Department's actions and programs.

As a Law Clerk with both the Alameda City Attorney office as well as the firm of Steenson, Schumann, Tewksbury, Creighton and Rose, PC, I have acquired solid experience in labor law litigation.  While with the Alameda City Attorney office, I provided legal representation on behalf of City personnel in varied municipal legal issues including labor/employee relations.  This required knowledge of Federal and State labor laws as well as a solid understanding of their applications/implications in broad-scope professions/industries.

From 2005-2006 with Steenson, Schumann, Tewksbury, Creighton and Rose PC, I handled diverse cases including strategically planning and conducting employment and labor law litigation.

2) Please describe your ability to organize plan and develop legal options and strategies.

With experience dating back to 2004, I offer solid background in organizing, planning and developing results-focused legal options and strategies. This has been a key role in each position I have held since launching and building my career

As an example, in my present position as a Legal Research Assistant with the County of Marin, District Attorney s Office, I have successfully spearheaded comprehensive factual/background data research using multiple resources, ranging from statutes and court decisions to legal actions and legislative history, in order to generate and analyze information critical to clearly defining legal options and developing optimal strategies.

KSA 2 Response continued

As a Law Clerk with Metropolitan Public Defender Inc., I thoroughly researched and analyzed cases, applicable legal principles and precedents in order to determine and develop affirmative or de facto defenses, tactical procedures and proactive alternatives. Prior to this, as a Law Clerk with Multnomah District Attorney s Office, I reviewed data, interpreted Court decisions/existing laws and ordinances and legislative history as well as pending legislation to strategically prosecute  misdemeanor and civil cases on the County s behalf.

Dating back to my First Year Clerkship, 2004-2005, I conducted extensive research vital to developing effective strategies supporting cases ranging from personal injury and family law to criminal defense and small business case litigation.

3) Please describe your ability to make effective oral presentations in a clear and concise manner.

Through an Oregon State Bar Public Honors Fellowship, I began delivering effective oral presentations by prosecuting both misdemeanor and civil case for the District Attorney s Office in Portland, Oregon.  Taking this experience, I moved on to Metropolitan Public Defender Inc., where as a Law Clerk I applied my legal knowledge and dynamic oral communication skills toward representing misdemeanor and non-complex cases, including arraignments, pleas, legal motions, jury trials, and post-judgment hearings.  In this capacity, I was highly effective in clearly, concisely and logically presenting statements of law, fact and arguments as well as advocating alternatives and leniency at sentence hearings. Further demonstrating my oral communication/presentation skills, I successfully negotiated with Deputy District Attorneys, prosecutors, probation officers, and judges for solutions-focused results.

Representing the City of Alameda, CA in 2007, I effectively addressed multiple municipal legal issues including labor/employee relations as well as regionalism, land use, environmental, and utilities.   Complementing this, as a Constituent Representative for Senator Barbara Boxer, 2001-2003, I contributed my sharp communication skills toward conferring with multiple government/private agencies, advising the public and liaising with constituents, attorneys and government personnel.
