FACTOR 1:   Ability to Communicate Orally and in Writing

In my current role as Chaplain Resident for the VA in their Medical Center in Dayton , OH, I provide counseling and support, as well as crisis intervention, to Veterans.  As a member of the patient care team, I participate in conferences, often in an advocacy role, and collaborate with other healthcare team members.  Post-conference meeting notes are memorialized to files and medical charts, including insertion of information regarding assessment of patient progress.  I participate in collaborative meetings with other healthcare team members, presenting files for review and working diligently with others in developing groups available for participation in alternate treatment programs.  To foster open communication among Center staff, I interact closely with them, providing support through personal or professional crises, and often serve as a mediator to facilitate conflict resolution between staff and patients.

In addition to Chaplain Resident, I am also currently Senior Pastor for a nearby United Church of Christ congregation and, preceding that assignment, served as Senior Pastor to another congregation.  Both of these Pastoral positions require continuous, on-going utilization of both oral and written communication skills.  Orally, my primary purpose as spiritual leader is to communicate God s direction to the congregation.  This includes conducting worship services, delivering weekly sermons, administering sacraments, visiting with and giving counsel and support to ill or infirm congregants, teaching weekly Bible study classes, and officiating at such life-changing events as weddings and funerals.

Written communications skill sets are and were employed in the development of weekly sermons, prior to presentation to the congregation.  This requires careful attention to the message and its format, so that the sermon can be presented as clearly and forcefully, yet succinctly, as possible.  Administratively, I work with the Church council in developing the budget, direct funds disbursal, oversee stewardship activities and design and implement policies and procedures for Christian education, all of which require utilization of the written word to convey philosophy and direction.

Prior to these assignments, I was Executive Director for a homeless shelter, focusing particularly on those individuals with mental illness and/or substance abuse problems.  I had to address and make presentations to the supporting denomination governing body to convince them to support increasing our facilities to include development of a day shelter, a 30-bed transitional unit and construction of a 12-unit low income apartment complex.  I also undertook the responsibility of recruiting, training and mentoring the staff and volunteers for these facilities, as well as writing all job descriptions and the employee procedures manual, and developing all training programs.  In order to increase available monies for the various facilities, I learned to produce Grant applications through continuing education and employed the resultant expertise in obtaining Grant funding, increasing our budget from $80,000 in 1994 to $1.2MM+ by 2002.

FACTOR 1:   Ability to Communicate Orally and in Writing - CONTINUED

As Director, I served on numerous Boards and Committees on homelessness and substance abuse, interfacing both through oral communication as well as written reports, and worked closely with the City of Louisville Police Department in training police officers on best methods for dealing with mentally ill and substance-abusing homeless individuals.

Earlier, I was Chaplain for a homeless shelter/mission serving the emergency needs of men and women.  Directing a staff of 19, I continually mentored them in providing civil, dignified and caring support.  Our Mission utilized the 12-step recovery program of Alcoholics/Narcotics Anonymous and as Chaplain I typically led the group discussions and teaching sessions.  Another function of Chaplain was to serve as an empathetic and compassionate source of care and support, which involved choosing the right words to give the most comfort and support.  Additionally, a the primary representative of our organization to the surrounding community, I presented the Mission s policies, with the goal of gaining acceptance and achieving positive interaction.  Most important, I employed my oral communication skills as spiritual leader of the worship services for the Mission, on both the Sabbath and church holidays, and officiated at other services marking important life-changing events, such as marriages and funerals or memorial services.

To facilitate the teaching component of the 12-step program, I also prepared the materials used in the classroom.   Classes were held on a seven days/week schedule and newcomers were required to attend as well as to prepare homework assignments, which were utilized in subsequent class sessions.  Upon graduation, I continued to provide assistance by working closely with Case Workers in preparing the documentation needed for accessing the various support services available through the state and Federal social services system, including finding housing and gaining employment.

My earliest assignment in the Social Services/Counseling field was as a Behavior Counselor at a home/shelter for young girls and adolescents who were the victims of various forms of abuse.  I coordinated services as part of a program to assist them in recovering from their traumas and moving forward to living healthy and productive lives.  These efforts required utilizing a great deal of oral communication on a consistent basis, interacting with the girls throughout the day as they were taught fundamental life skills such as basic chores and adhering to schedules for school and homework, meals and bedtimes.  All of these activities presented opportunities for one-on-one conversation and mentoring, as well as teaching in a group setting.  Following daily sessions with the residents, I would participate in discussions with other members of the therapeutic teams, which allowed opportunities to for me to clearly present advocacy support issues in a roundtable, conversational format.  I also submitted written reports of my interfacing and therapy sessions into the files for each of the youngsters.  These reports were used to communicate my findings and analyses to be used in conjunction with those of other members of the support team to understand each girl and develop a treatment plan geared to her specific needs.

FACTOR 2:   Ability to Provide Clinical Pastoral Care and Counseling in a Healthcare Setting

Drawing on more than two decades of providing supportive care and counseling, as well as advanced education, I currently serve in a clinical pastoral care assignment in a healthcare setting as Chaplain Resident for the VA Healthcare System of Ohio at their Dayton VA Medical Center in Dayton, OH.  In this assignment, I provide spiritual support to Veterans in varying degrees of distress and crises, focusing on empathetic listening and expressing understanding regarding their circumstances and needs.

Further, I employ formal training and education, as well as long-term experience, to offer spiritual assessment of individuals and identify at-risk patients whose religious/spiritual conflicts may have been a cause of interference with returning to health.   Importantly, I closely monitor environment and individuals to ensure patients are not proselytized by any outside influences or individuals, and uphold strict adherence to the principle of the right of each individual to chose his own belief system.

As a member of the Veterans patient care team, I participate in care conferences, assessing patients spiritual status and adding my conclusions to the medical files.  I also interface with other healthcare teams, assisting by providing spiritually-focused groups to participate in various treatment programs.

Additionally, I provide graveside services for internment at the VA National Cemetery.

FACTOR 3:   Ability to Provide Ministry in a Pluralistic Setting

Since receiving my Master of Divinity in Pastoral Ministry in 1986, I have been involved in increasingly responsible positions of serving individuals ranging from abused children and adolescents in a non-denominational group home setting, through an assignment as Chaplain for a Christian Mission serving homeless individuals of all ages, to the Executive Directorship of a Baptist-affiliated shelter home and low-income housing complex, to a Senior Pastor position for a United Church of Christ congregation in North Carolina and currently in dual roles as a Senior Pastor in Ohio and as Chaplain Resident for the Veterans Administration at their Dayton, Ohio, Medical Center.

Both of these assignments require a spiritual base for providing close and supportive interaction with individuals in need.  It is important for patients to believe strongly in the empathetic and understanding support of the caregiver in order to progress toward the goal of wellness and/or stability.  My function is to provide such counseling support to patients at the VA as well as congregants and non-members at our church.  I bring to bear my experience as an individual who understands the variety of difficulties people face and offer suggestions for dealing with difficult circumstances and re-directing some of the dynamics of poorly-functioning families in crisis.  In all cases, my approach to counseling and problem resolution emphasizes the spiritual component involved.

For the VA, I work closely with other members of the Veterans patient care team, contributing to care conferences and offering assessment of patient spiritual status.  I collaborate with other teams in assisting with the formation of groups to participate in a number of treatment programs.

As Executive Director of a homeless shelter that was particularly focused on assisting individuals with mental illness or substance abuse issues, I was the face of the Center and represented it with a variety of charitable organizations, including serving as a member of the Executive Board of the Louisville Chapter of the Coalition for the Homeless, and on the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Committee for the Homeless and the Mental Health Committee for the Homeless.  I also worked with the City of Louisville and the Coalition for the Homeless Continuum of Care Committee, and served in a liaison role with the City of Louisville Police Department to provide training in dealing with homeless and disadvantaged individuals.  And I was a member of the Interfaith Committee for Kentucky.

In an earlier Chaplain role, I directed and mentored a staff of 19 in providing empathetic and dignified care at a Christian Mission shelter for the homeless.  Additionally at this facility, led classes in 12-step recovery programs for individuals dealing with substance abuse issues, and served as mediator and counselor for conflict issues between staff and management.  As Chaplain, met with community leaders to present and explain the goals and direction of Mission.

FACTOR 4:   Knowledge of Worship Principles and Practices

For more than two decades, since my ordination by the Baptist Church in 1984, I have served as Pastor to a number of congregations.

In my present pastoral role, I am the Senior Pastor at the Campbellstown United Church of Christ in Eaton, OH.  For our congregation, I lead worship services and participation in various rituals of the Christian church.  This includes observing the Sabbath, preparing and delivering inspirational and instructional sermons, offering up prayer, leading silent meditation, administration of the Sacraments and reading from and studying the Holy Bible.  Additionally, I lead observance of Church holidays, such as Christmas, Easter, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, following prescribed forms of celebration of these important days and times.

Prior to my current assignment I filled similar responsibilities as Senior Pastor for the Shallow Ford United Church of Christ in Elon, N.C.

For members and non-members alike, I officiate at funerals and memorial services, and other life-changing events and rituals, including weddings and baptisms.  And I provide assistance with difficult ethical decisions, particularly regarding end-of-life decisions, by bringing scriptural directives into the discussion.

As Chaplain for the Wayside Christian Mission in Louisville, I have served in a number of roles, including that of spiritual leader for this non-denominational homeless shelter.  I Led worship services on the Sabbath as well as on other Church holidays, which included prayer, Scripture reading and study, and offering blessings and the Sacraments.  Additionally, I officiated at important life-changing events, such as marriages, baptisms and funerals and memorial services.

FACTOR 5:   Ability to Establish Relationships and Deal Effectively with Others

In my current dual roles as Chaplain Resident for the Veterans Administration at their Dayton, OH, Medical Center, and as Senior Pastor for a United Church of Christ congregation in Eaton, OH, I provide support to individuals in need, as well as employing administrative management techniques necessary for management of staff personnel.  My strong depth of experience in developing relationships with patients and congregants has resulted in these individuals being able to react positively to the empathetic and understanding support they receive, resulting in progress toward wellness and stability.  I work closely with patients and members/non-members of our congregation, bringing to bear my experience as an individual who understands the variety of difficulties people face and offering suggestions to re-directing some of the dynamics of poorly-functioning families in crisis.  In all cases, my approach to counseling and problem resolution emphasizes the spiritual component involved.

For the VA, I work closely with other members of the care team, contributing to conferences and offering assessment of patient spiritual status.  I collaborate with other teams in assisting with the formation of groups to participate in a number of treatment programs.  Further, I maintain close relationships with staff members, serving as a mediator during staff/patient conflicts and generally as a source of support during personal or workplace crises.   I also work closely with others in the Chaplain staff in officiating at graveside internment services at the VA National Cemetery.

As Senior Pastor, I automatically serve on various governing boards and committees.  In these positions, I work closely in developing and implementing such issues as budgets, disbursal of funds, planning of worship services and oversight of stewardship and Christian education activities.  As with any human group endeavor, these responsibilities carry with them the requirement for working with sometimes disparate factions, understanding the variety of agendas at play, and serving as both a leader yet conciliator, to blend the many into the cohesive one so that a greater good can be served.

In an earlier role as Executive Director of a Baptist Center focusing on assisting homeless individuals, I worked closely with the Baptist governing board, convincing them of the wisdom of splitting off the Center as a separate entity.  As Director, I interfaced with legal advisors to prepare necessary documentation, and with contractors involved in several construction projects.  I recruited and trained all staff as well as volunteers.  To support and increase our budget, I enrolled in a Grant-writing course to learn to prepare and present Grant applications based on our fiscal needs.  The result of this was the growth of our budgetary funds from $80,000 at the beginning of my tenure at the Center to $1.2MM when I left.

Also, as Director, I was the face of the Center and as such, represented it with a variety of charitable organizations, including serving as a member of the Executive Board of the Louisville Chapter of the Coalition for the Homeless, and on the Alcohol and Substance
