Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
KSA 1: Ability to work in teams to achieve results?
As a Master of Business Administration candidate, I consistently worked
collaboratively in a team-oriented manner, functioning as either a team member
or a team leader. As we worked on several projects, I applied and maintained
core values of teamwork, accountability, empowerment, and diversity.
Actually all of the MBA courses consisted of a project component requiring team
building and cooperation. Team projects were completed in a face-to-face or
virtual setting. In a virtual setting, team members were given conference call
numbers to dial in at a specified time. I was chosen as Team Leader during one
specific project and the team chose a company/product line, and provided an overview
of the business environment of the two countries selected for the case study. As
we completed the case study we generated a written report in which the team
recommended which of the two countries offered the more favorable business
climate for teams studied company.
Often times, as an appendix to the assignment, we generated a team assessment report that evaluated how the learning objectives in its team work plan are achieved. I also verified each person s individual contribution to team success. Each team had had two subgroups and although some assignments are individual, team collaboration is required. As team members, we strive to support one another and review individual papers to ensure that they are in sync with the established standards. Additionally, as an employee of the US Army I exhibited the knowledge and overcame the challenges of a leader which is mainly to capitalize on the strengths of my subordinates.
KSA 2. Ability to write persuasively and
effectively in English.
Throughout my career, I have consistently been able to write persuasively and efficiently in English. As a student, I have written several term papers. I write in a persuasive manner to enable understanding and influence. Even during my career, I continue to choose the most appropriate mode for communicating my messages and use effective language to express information clearly in well-constructed letters, proposals, reports, memos, and email. Over the years, I have been required to maintain impeccably written documents and produce detailed reports and edit post orders. I proofread all reports to ensure the accuracy and completeness of records, and deliver important data to the intended recipient.
Of course, I ensure that all of my documentation is grammatically correct, spelling error free, and reviewed for both content and format to avoid any unnecessary miscommunication. I make sure that my written words say exactly what I mean and have the ability to quickly analyze, organize, write, and revise any document. I use expressive words, keep sentences and paragraphs short, and keep thoughts simple. I format documents so that they are inviting to look at and easy to read. I use various techniques that involve the reader and create the feeling of personal communication. These factors alone contribute significantly to the influence of my written communications.
KSA 3: Ability to communicate effectively other
than in writing.
Throughout my career, it has remained to be an important function to
communicate effectively other than in writing. I have consistently demonstrated communication skills through
experiences such as technical presentations, public speaking, or serving as a
spokesperson. The ability to communicate effectively in more than
written format is vital to the success of a person working in my capacity. I
consistently seek ways to enhance my ability to communicate verbally.
Specifically, I completed several presentations during speech class where the
focus was to create, develop, and deliver speeches to a variety of attendees. I
ensure that when speaking to others, I always take the time to understand the
intended recipient s ideas and words prior to communicating my ideas in any
format. I learned how to choose the most appropriate mode for communicating my
messages and use effective language to express information clearly. As a
result, I communicate in a persuasive manner when trying to convince others of
the validity of my points. It is with great tact that I handle the issues of
customers offering concern and identifying the underlying issues before
speaking.
Additionally, when delivering on the job training and professional development courses to 5 to 10 newly hired personnel. I would also deliver 20 to 30 minute speeches and allow the attendees to ask follow up questions. When training other professionals, I offer information in a clear and concise manner that does not leave room for ambiguity. My speaking voice is clear and I pronounce words accurately as to allow for complete understanding by all my students. I communicate the objectives, priorities, and deadlines for projects or assignments and assist subordinates with unusual situations, problems, or studies that do not have clear precedents. I plan and carry out the successive steps of technical projects and assignments, and handle problems and deviations in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted practices, with little or no supervision.
Due to my extensive, administrative professional background, I possess excellent interpersonal skills. I consider and respond appropriately to the needs, feelings, and capabilities of different people in different situations in a tactful, compassionate, and sensitive manner, consistently treating others with respect. I interface with personnel from all levels of an organization as necessary and maintain an open door policy conducive to good communication with others. I know there are several key factors for successful communications including being an effective listener. I listen to others actively, critically, and responsively. This approach ultimately saves time and reduces costly mistakes and losses caused by miscommunication with both internal and external personnel.
